The University of Louisville student chapter of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) hosts the Midnight Mayhem mini-racer competition and will field four of the 20 teams scheduled to compete.
The Baja SAE endurance race will start at 8 p.m. and finish at midnight at the lighted dirt track at Podium1 Motoplex, 2921 Sunset Trail, in Charlestown, Ind. Spectator admission is $10, and the track opens at 2 p.m.
The vehicle that completes the most laps is the winner. Teams will drive four-wheel, off-road vehicles of their own design. The vehicles use 10-horsepower stock engines and fuel tanks.
Baja SAE teams race in other competitions regionally and nationally. This nighttime invitational event is an unsanctioned warm-up that gives teams racing experience in the fall before other competitions resume in the spring and summer.
UofL’s racing team finished in the top 10 in three SAE competitions earlier this year. Team members raise funds for, design, manage, build, test, promote and drive their vehicles as an extracurricular activity.
