The University of Louisville’s Special Collections Department has the world’s largest institutional collection of Tarzan materials and is honoring the “ape man” with a birthday party Sunday, Oct. 28, at 3:30 p.m. in Ekstrom Library’s Chao Auditorium.
Guests are:
- Novelist Robin Maxwell, author of “Jane: The Woman who Loved Tarzan” – the first version of the Tarzan story written by a woman and authorized by the Burroughs estate. (Editor’s Note: UofL learned Oct. 22 that Maxwell is unable to attend due to health reasons.)
- Internationally acclaimed Burroughs expert Scott Tracy Griffin, whose “Tarzan: The Centennial Celebration” — the only official commemorative illustrated history of a century of Tarzan — is due out Oct. 30.
- John R. Burroughs, the author’s grandson.
- Jim Sullos, president of Edgar Rice Burroughs Inc.
- Denny Miller, film star, “Tarzan the Ape Man” (1959).
- George McWhorter, curator of UofL’s Edgar Rice Burroughs collection. Burroughs scholars and fans acknowledge McWhorter as one of the world’s top experts on the Tarzan author.
The program will include an exhibit of vintage posters and film stills, book signings and presentations – and there will be cake afterwards. Event admission is free and open to the public.
