Archaeologists and art historians will transport listeners to ancient times to examine the roles of Cleopatra and other women in antiquity through a lecture series at the University of Louisville.
The College of Arts and Sciences’ Liberal Studies Project and the Archaeological Institute of America’s Kentucky Society are sponsoring the free, public “Women in the Ancient Mediterranean” lecture series this fall and next spring on UofL’s Belknap Campus.
Here are the fall 2015 semester talks:
Sept. 10 – “The Feminine Mystique: Women in the Ancient World,” Jenifer Neils, Case Western Reserve University art history and classics chair, field archaeologist and museum curator. Her books include “Women in the Ancient World” and “The British Museum Concise Introduction to Ancient Greece.” Her talk will begin at 5 p.m. in the University Club.
Oct. 8 – “Cleopatra: An Archaeological Perspective on Egypt’s Last Pharaoh,” John Hale, UofL liberal studies director, archaeologist and author of “Lords of the Sea: The Epic Story of the Athenian Navy and the Birth of Democracy.” His research interests and fieldwork pertain to ancient oracle sites, nautical and underwater archaeology and rural life in the western Roman empire. His talk will begin at 6 p.m. in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.
Oct. 22 – “Life and the ‘Good Death’ at Torre de Palma, Portugal,” Mary Lucas Powell, University of Kentucky anthropology professor emeritus and former director/curator of UK’s W.S. Webb Museum of Anthropology who studies the natural history of ancient diseases. Her talk will begin at 6 p.m. in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.
Nov. 12 – “Crossing the Corrupting Sea: Women on the Move in the Ancient Mediterranean,” Sheila Dillon, Duke University art history and classical studies professor and American Journal of Archaeology editor-in-chief. Dillon co-edited “A Companion to Women in the Ancient World” and wrote “The Female Portrait Statue in the Greek World” and “Ancient Greek Portrait Sculpture: Contexts, Subjects and Styles.” Her talk will begin at 6 p.m. in Chao Auditorium, Ekstrom Library.
