The theme of this year’s 10K/6.2-mile race is “Connecting Communities One Step at a Time.” The 2013 Ali Shuffle welcomed 200 runners, while the 2014 Ali Shuffle hopes to attract 500.
The Ali Shuffle will begin at Louisville native Muhammad Ali’s former grade school (the Virginia Avenue Elementary School, now known as the West End School) at 3628 Virginia Ave. The race’s route will take participants past Ali’s childhood home as well as his alma mater, Central High School. The race will conclude at the Ali Center, 144 N. Sixth St.
The Ali Shuffle Run/Walk will raise funds to support the Ali Scholars’ International Learning Journey, in which students explore peace building, social justice and sustainable community development in a global context. This year, the Ali Scholars will be traveling to Rwanda and Uganda to see how these countries are addressing social justice issues. Upon their return, the students use their insights from abroad and the knowledge they have gained through the Ali Scholars Program to implement a project to benefit the greater Louisville community. The Ali Shuffle Run/Walk will also provide opportunities for other groups in the city to raise funds through sponsored participation in the event.
