The section of Eastern Parkway, which runs from Third Street to the entrance to the Speed School of Engineering, had been scheduled to reopen on Dec. 17, weather permitting. However, cold temperatures have slowed the paving schedule.
The roadway, consisting of single vehicular lanes and bike lanes in each direction, will reopen by 7 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21.
As previously noted, repairs for the bridge on Eastern Parkway over the CSX Railroad will continue into next year.
Upon jacking the pier caps and removing portions of the bridge deck, contractor crews and Kentucky Transportation Cabinet inspectors discovered more deterioration to the bridge than was previously thought to be present. Significant additional repairs will need to be performed on the structure.
Taking into account the time needed for the repairs and the fact that some work will be prohibited due to the cold winter temperatures, the bridge work is estimated to be complete in June 2010. Eastern Parkway will remain closed between Hahn Street and the entrance to Speed School. Old Eastern Parkway also will remain closed during this construction.
