Dr. Murali Ankem, director of minimally invasive surgery in the department of urology at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, is the new chair of Urology at the University of Louisville. Dr. Edward Halperin, dean of the UofL School of Medicine, announced today that Ankem’s appointment is effective Oct. 1.
“Dr. Ankem is a skilled clinician and respected teacher,” Halperin said. “He is charged with fostering our urology residency program, developing our urologic cancer services and expanding the department. I have great confidence in him.”
Ankem was an intern at Mercy Catholic Medical Center in Pennsylvania. He completed his residency at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He was a fellow in urology at Monash Medical Center in Melbourne, Australia, and in endourology and laparoscopy at the University of Wisconsin Medical School.
Prior to joining the faculty at UMDNJ, Ankem was an assistant professor of urology at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center as well as chief of urology services at Overton Brooks Medical Center.
The author of more than 45 papers in the scientific literature, Ankem serves as a reviewer for the journal Urology, the Journal of Urology and the Journal of Endourology.
