LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Award-winning poet Alysia Harris will perform her work and discuss social justice activism as a spoken word artist during an Oct. 5 visit to the University of Louisville.
Harris’ free, public performance as part of the Global Humanities Series will begin at 4 p.m. at Speed Cinema, 2035 S. Third St.
In several years of touring, the poet has performed at the United Nations and in South Africa, Canada, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. She was a founding member of The Strivers Row performance poetry collective and is editor-in-chief of the Atlanta-based nonprofit publication Scalawag, which focuses on Southern politics and culture.
Harris won the Stephen Dunn Poetry Prize, sponsored by Solstice literary magazine, in 2014 and 2015 and is a Pushcart Prize nominee. She received her master of fine arts degree in poetry from New York University and is a doctoral candidate in linguistics at Yale University.
While seeking her undergraduate degree at The University of Pennsylvania, she competed on the winning youth poetry slam team in the Brave New Voices contest and was featured in the HBO documentary “Brave New Voices.”
