    11.) Grawemeyer Awards Lecture Series: Health Justice—Hermeneutic of Blessing?

    Susan R. Holman, senior writer at the Global Health Education and Learning Incubator at Harvard University, presents “Health Justice – Hermeneutic of Blessing?” Holman received the 2016 Grawemeyer Award in Religion for her book, “Beholden: Religion, Global Health, and Human Rights,” in which she examines how faith-based and human rights organizations’ divergent ideological approaches can undermine efforts to address global health issues. A reception and book signing will follow Holman’s lecture.

    12.) No Cost Memberships for students and faculty to the Kentucky Academy of Science

    UofL is an Enhanced Affiliate member of the KAS. Faculty and students interested in science are encouraged to take advantage of free memberships which provide news, announcements, job and research opportunities from KAS; are eligible to apply for grants and publish in the Journal of the KAS; search the KAS database and connect with 3000 fellow scientists across Kentucky.     13.) Registration open for 2016 Faculty/Staff Open Walls exhibit

    Registration due June 1

    The annual show for faculty and staff is scheduled for June 13 to June 30 in the Photographic Archives gallery at Ekstrom Library. The exhibit is an opportunity for UofL employees who are not professional or exhibited artists to share their work.     14.) Special seminar focuses on MicroScale Thermophoresis

    April 11, 3-4 p.m., Kosair Charities Clinical and Translational Research Building, Room 124

    Free

    The topic, “Biomolecular Interaction Analytics using MicroScale Thermophoresis,” will be presented by Ellen Lee, PhD, an Application Scientist from NanoTemper Technologies Inc., Cambridge, Mass. This seminar will describe a new technique for measuring binding interaction, MicroScale Thermophoresis (MST). The method promises to be of great use in drug discovery, since binding can be measured using far less material than usual biophysical methods.

    Writing for publication is a vital part of grad students’ professional development. This workshop covers the process of writing for STEM publications, including approaches for turning research and seminar papers into journal articles. It also addresses the practical concerns of writing for publication, e.g. identifying an appropriate publication and work revision.

    16.) PLAN hosts workshop on effective teaching using technology

    Are you a GTA wanting to learn ways to use technology effectively in your classes? This workshop is designed to help GTAs learn about, choose, and integrate classroom technologies that will help them teach more effectively and will provide participants with an understanding of how using various tech platforms can enhance students’ knowledge of research skills, group collaboration, and in-class discussion.

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend the Lab Safety/Hazardous Waste session. Individuals who will begin working with or around radioactive materials should attend the Radiation Safety Orientation session which starts immediately after Lab Safety.     22.) Childhood Obesity in Children 10 to less than 14 year olds

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.

    23.) Autism study for children 4 to 10 years old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

    24.) Children 8 to 13 years needed for anxiety and worry study

    Are you stressed? Is your child stressed, anxious, or worried? We can help. The UofL Developmental Psychopathology Lab is conducting a study examining the nature of worry and anxiety in parents and children. Parents and their children between the ages of 8 and 13 years are eligible to participate. Participants will be compensated $20 for their time and receive free diagnostic interviews, detailed feedback and a report outlining the results of our assessment.
